Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is used to help people develop essential living skills, increase their independence, and improve the quality of life for the whole family. This is done by giving you strategies to help you deal with challenges and make positive changes to your home environment and support needs.
It’s a science-based field that looks at everything a person does and how they do it. We will examine the relationship between your environment and activities to see how they affect each other.
Occupational therapy is about helping you live a more active and satisfying life.
Common activities we can help you with:
- Self-care routines such as toileting, washing and dressing
- Eating habits, extreme likes and dislikes
- Going to the shops
- Community integration (using public transport, mobility, safety procedures, etc)
- Participating in school activities
- Leisure, socialising and relationships
- Transition and adaptation to college life or employment
- Independent living skills
- Engaging in your environment home/school and community
Many of the activities above could lead to challenging behaviour, so we should think about doing stress-management activities, like swimming, having a massage, or listening to music.
